MAIN OBJECTIVE
The Publisher will work in partnership with the CEO to create, manage, and grow a well-rounded and successful children’s publishing business. This role will oversee the editorial, design, and managing editorial functions for 3 imprints – Little Bee Books, BuzzPop, and Yellow Jacket. The Publisher will manage a frontlist of approximately 125 titles per year alongside reprints and special sales/custom projects. The Publisher will be responsible for managing the entire editorial, managing editorial, and design processes of the list.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the CEO to curate a successful publishing list for 3 seasons every year that accurately fits the needs of the North American market, with outreach into the global market.
  • Create an identity for each imprint through successfully selecting a cohesive publishing list for each season.
  • Effectively manage the editorial content and design, spot key trends, and constantly reassess the editorial strategy to ensure top efficiency and results.
  • Oversee the implementation of the editorial strategy, including, but not limited to acquisitions, agent/author/illustrator relations, P&L’s, marketing and publicity efforts, and production quality control.
  • Guide the day-to-day activity of the editorial, design, and managing editorial teams and work closely with these teams to define requirements and objectives.
  • Conceive, develop, and acquire original titles to each seasonal list.
  • Acquire and publish licenses suitable for our formats and the North American market.
  • Maximize existing relationships with key agencies, illustrators, and authors to ensure the imprints are well positioned to take up exciting new opportunities.
  • Provide a strategic direction to the publishing programs.
  • Bear responsibility for editorial integrity and standards.
    Continuously analyze the competitive environment and consumer trends and publish ahead of the curve.
  • Present titles at sales conference meetings for our distribution partner and any in-house meetings.
  • Lead and participate in the editorial process from acquisitions to sales and marketing for all titles.
  • Liaise closely with the sales, marketing, and publicity to ensure that the lists reflect and drive market trends domestically and globally.
  • Oversee all aspects of the book design process.
  • Hire and manage freelance editors and illustrators as and when needed.
  • Set and achieve key targets in terms of titles commissioned, profitability, and stock management.
  • Define and oversee the implementation of processes that need to be put in place within the editorial, design, and managing editorial teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred, or college course work and knowledge gained through equivalent work experience.
  • Must be extremely detail oriented, with excellent follow through, the ability to handle multiple tasks at once, and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • 10+ years’ experience in children’s editorial.
  • Extensive and intimate knowledge of the North American book publishing industry and the various players in the marketplace.
  • A strong understanding of the US and Canadian markets and a proven track record within these markets.
  • Experience with acquiring and publishing licenses in the North American marketplace.
  • Longstanding relations with agents and authors.
  • Experience with design, managing editorial, and editorial and a desire to learn more to effectively manage the processes and functions within the managing editorial, design, and editorial team.
  • Superior editing skills and the ability to Americanize product by changing format, cover, and content to fit the North American aesthetic.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Competent with managing profitability and budgeting.
  • Highly professional individual with integrity, initiative, and a driving ambition to make a real impact on our business.
  • A go-getter who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.

*This position is temporarily remote and will be based full-time out of our New York City offices.

Our National Account Manager, Special Markets will be an experienced, results-driven, and successful sales professional who will provide expertise and management for sales primarily across specialty retail and wholesale channels and to a lesser extent within the premium and corporate sales markets. Extensive experience within the book publishing industry as well as strong relationships with buyers are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing and growing existing accounts across specialty retail, specialty wholesale, premium, and corporate channels in the US and Canada.
  • Growing Little Bee Books’ overall specialty account base by pursuing new business opportunities and adding new accounts within the US and Canada.
  • Working closely with the head of sales on growth strategies and regularly reporting on progress.
  • Developing new sales opportunities for Little Bee Books, BuzzPop, and Yellow Jacket children’s books.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with buyers and collaborating strategically when appropriate.
  • Creating and delivering regular account presentations and handling day-to-day account business.
  • Providing consistent, persistent, and progressing follow-up on new business.
  • Learning and regularly utilizing Little Bee Books’ internal systems for asset management, title data, and sales reporting.
  • Keeping apprised of trends in children’s publishing.
  • Participation in interdepartmental monthly brainstorms on the direction of overall publishing.
  • Collaborating internally with multiple departments to help execute sales and influence future title acquisitions.
  • Managing sales goals and sales operation budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred, or college course work and knowledge gained through equivalent work experience.
  • 3+ years special markets sales experience.
  • Children’s publishing sales experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven record of new business development and revenue growth.
  • Solid foundation of key buying contacts.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to self-start and enthusiastically pursue growth.
  • A friendly, courteous, outgoing, and customer service-oriented manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Detail oriented with excellent follow through and a positive attitude.
    Ability to work independently, decisively, and productively with minimum supervision.
  • Up to 20% travel required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for all facets of production for a variety of book formats including, but not limited to, hardcover, paperback, 1-color, 4-color, licensed, and novelty products.
  • Source quotes from domestic and foreign vendors and supply timely and accurate pricing internally
  • Manage purchasing, preflighting, proof routing, and quality assurance of sales materials, reprints, co-editions, proprietary, and initial printings.
  • Create and release final purchase orders and validate and process final invoices.
  • Partner with other departments and outside vendors to ensure all production deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate inventory initial print run solicitation process.
  • Communicate with freight forwarder and warehouse to make sure deliveries arrive as scheduled.
  • Create and maintain schedules and status reports.
  • Manage and stay current with CPSIA and all other safety testing requirement for print books.
  • Comply with financial and other company accounting/fiscal practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university preferred, or college course work and knowledge gained through equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years progressively responsible production experience.
  • Direct experience overseeing book production processes in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • Experience with evaluating, negotiating, and placing work at domestic and foreign vendors.
  • Ability to turn loosely defined requirements into initiatives with a measurable outcome and a proven track record of successful project execution.
  • Experience operating workflow management systems.
  • Ability to solve difficult and complex issues.
  • Solid people and team management experience and the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships across a range of functional, professional, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent critical, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong experience managing vendor performance and relationships.
